Growing up in the Cumberland Highlands of Eastern Kentucky, the Atlantic ocean seems a million miles away.
So it’s with a certain fever that I make my way to Litchfield Beach, South Carolina (immediately procuring a mauve Panama Jack shirt and custom made French Foreign Legion hat emblazoned: “Bod Squad” ) as a 16 year old lad eager to see the world.

Once upon a time the grocery stores in New Orleans all had Coffee Partner on their shelves. If I recall, it was packaged pure ground chicory and was used to enhance the flavor of ordinary to below average coffee beans.
It has now disappeared. It’s no longer at Canseco’s, Rouse’s, Robert’s or any of our normal haunts.
Who remembers Coffee Partner?

Len Davis
Len Davis was a cold-blooded killer, a bodyguard to drug traffickers, and most importantly, a New Orleans police officer with such a fearsome reputation that he was known as “the Desire Terrorist,” an appellation he earned by cracking skulls and robbing drug dealers in the Desire Projects of New Orleans 9th Ward.

John “Prince” Gilbert

He passed away last week.
Rest in peace king.
When that cold nor’easter blew in from Lake Pontchartrain last night I got to thinking about chili.
Texas chili.
Texas Red to be precise.
I retired undefeated from the Texas chili wars over a decade ago. Back in the 90s, well before Top Chef became a thing, I organized a series of cooking competitions called Texas Top Cook. I would visit the best restaurants in Austin with an open letter to the cooks in the kitchen.
